New York Jets Set for ‘64

Aug. 2, 1964 - The New York Jets made their 1964 debut on Long Island today in an intrasquad football game before 6,000 fans that saw the Green team No. 1 defensive unit and No. 2 offensive unit score a 28-7 victory over the White team first-team offense and second-team defense.

Coach Weeb Ewbank and his staff were the chief beneficiaries, along with the Long Island Lion’s Youth Fund and the Hofstra University Library Building Fund.

Ewbank said he was pleased with the overall performance of his AFL club.

On the basis of this game, Mike Taliaferro (pictured), a rookie from Illinois, outpointed Pete Liske of Penn State for the right to play behind Dick Wood, the regular quarterback.

Taliaferro, on his first play, threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Alphonso Lawson, a player the Jets picked up in a public tryout at Macombs Dam Park in May. Taliaferro sneaked a yard for the game’s final touchdown.
