New York Jets Obtain Offensive Guard Sam DeLuca

July 9, 1964 - A seasoned offensive guard, Sam DeLuca (pictured), today was sold by the San Diego Chargers of the AFL to the New York Jets for an undisclosed amount.

DeLuca, a 27-year-old schoolteacher in Brooklyn, was sold after he told the Chargers he would retire if he could not play football in New York.

DeLuca had retired for the 1962 season but played with the AFL champions a year ago.

He played college football at South Carolina and was an all-Atlantic Coast Conference choice. He then played for two years with Toronto of the Canadian League before joining the Chargers when the team was organized in 1960.

DeLuca is 6-2 and weight 242 pounds. He will be a top candidate for the right-guard post with the Jets.
