Jan. 10, 1964 - The white mantel of the room used by President and Mrs. Johnson as their bedroom has a new inscription. It reads: “In this room lived John Fitzgerald Kennedy with his wife Jacqueline during the two years, 10 months, and two days he was President of the United States.” It is directly below another inscription on the mantel that reads: “In this room Abraham Lincoln slept during his occupancy of the White House as President of the United States.” Below that are the dates: “March 4, 1861-April 13, 1865.” Mrs. Kennedy (pictured Jan. 4) had the latest inscription carved in small letters two days before she moved out of the White House.
