Nov. 25, 1964 - NBC, which will add professional football to its television schedule next fall under a five‐year contract with the American Football League, expects to present many of the games in color.
ABC, which is now televising the games, presents them in black and white. Also in black and white are the NFL contests on CBS. William MacPhail, vice president of sports for CBS‐TV, said yesterday the broadcasts would again be presented in black and white next fall.
NBC’s vice president of sports, Carl Lindemann Jr., said, “Our intention is to try to do as many games in color as we can. It all depends on how many color cameras and other facilities we have available.”
On most Saturday afternoons, one of the college football games carried by NBC is presented in color. Next fall, more color equipment will be required to do a college game on Saturday and a professional game on Sunday. Lindemann said the cost of a three-camera mobile unit was about $500,000. For college games, NBC uses five color cameras.
Industry observers believe that NBC’s goal is to offer a professional game in color each Sunday afternoon next fall. Earlier this year it sought to outbid CBS for rights to the NFL games, but when CBS won, NBC moved immediately to obtain rights to AFL games.
Through television promotion, it is now out to build new interest in the AFL and its own programs and to sell color sets for its parent company, RCA.
