Namath Enters Hospital for Knee Surgery

Jan. 24, 1965 - Quarterback Joe Namath, the New York Jets’ $400,000 bonus baby, entered Lenox Hill Hospital today to undergo surgery to correct a knee injury.

Dr. James Nicholas, the team’s orthopedic consultant, will perform the operation at Lenox Hill Hospital. The operation is known medically as “arthrotomy of the knee for the removal of a damaged lateral meniscus.”

Namath was expected to be hospitalized from 10 days to two weeks after the operation. Players have been able to practice eight weeks after similar operations.

Weeb Ewbank, head coach of the Jets, predicted that the knee would be “as good as new” after the surgery.

“We never would have selected Joe as our No. 1 draft choice if there had been any doubt his knee wouldn’t hold up,” Ewbank said.
