Muhammad Ali Attends Final Rites for Sam Cooke

Dec. 18, 1964 - More than 10,000 persons attended final rites on the South side of Chicago last night for Sam Cooke, 32, recording artist and gospel singer, who was fatally shot in Los Angeles last Friday.

Police said an estimated 8,000 persons were present when the doors to the funeral chapel at 7838 Cottage Grove Ave. were opened at 4 p.m. for a final visitation for the Chicago-born singer. His body was flown to the city yesterday. Several thousand more were unable to gain entry to the Tabernacle Baptist Church, 4130 Indiana Ave., for the funeral services at 8 p.m.

The rites were delayed for 45 minutes until police could get relatives of Cooke through the crowds into the church. Muhammad Ali (pictured), heavyweight champion, and Dick Gregory, entertainer, were among those attending the service conducted by the Rev. Clarence Hobbs. Burial will be today in Glendale, Calif.
