July 28, 1964 - Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy, who celebrated her 35th birthday in New York today, has agreed to buy a 15-room apartment on Fifth Avenue.
The apartment is on the top floor of a gray granite 15-story building on Fifth Avenue at 85th Street. It has five bedrooms and overlooks a bridle path and the reservoir in Central Park.
Mrs. Kennedy arrived in New York today at La Guardia Airport (pictured) from Hyannis Port, Mass., where she has been spending the summer with her children, Caroline, 6 years old, and John Jr., 3.
Earlier this month, Mrs. Kennedy announced in Washington that she was giving up her Georgetown home and would move to New York in early fall.
The announcement indicated that the widow of the slain President wished to leave the tragic memories of Washington, where her home had become a major tourist attraction.
Douglas Elliman, head of the real estate concern that is managing agent for the Fifth Avenue building, said today that the apartment had been sold for about $200,000. Maintenance charges, he said, were about $14,000 annually.
Mr. Elliman said 30 other families lived in the building, which was built in the 1920s and has two apartments on each floor. Mrs. Kennedy will occupy both apartments on the top floor.
