Movies: “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold”

Aug. 19, 1964 - Richard Burton has been signed to star in the screen version of “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold,” the largest-selling novel in the United States at this time.

John Le Carré’s story of espionage in the sector of the Berlin Wall has been on the bestseller lists for more than 30 weeks and has already gone into its 17th printing.

Martin Ritt, director of the highly successful “Hud,” will direct and produce the film for Paramount, which is readying the film for a start in October of next year on location in Europe.

Burt Lancaster was originally set for Burton’s role, but other commitments interfered. Shooting was delayed to take advantage of the European winter, whose atmosphere is considered essential to the story.

The book deals with the final assignment of a middle-aged British agent on a crisscrossed course of intrigue that has explosive consequences.
