May 8, 1963 - “The Day of the Triffids,” a British science fiction horror film in CinemaScope and Eastmancolor starring Howard Keel and Nicole Maurey, makes its U.S. debut next Wednesday as part of a double feature with “Women of Nazi Germany.” “Triffids,” which was directed by Steve Sekely and Freddie Francis, is loosely based on the 1951 novel of the same name by John Wyndham. After an unusual meteor shower leaves most of the human population blind, a merchant navy officer must find a way to conquer tall, aggressive plants which are feeding on people and animals.
