Movies: “Sex and the Single Girl”

Aug. 6, 1963 - Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood will be in “Sex and the Single Girl,” based on the non-fiction Helen Gurley Brown book, which Richard Quine will direct for Warner Brothers next month. The two players were last seen together in Delmer Daves’s “Kings Go Forth” in 1958. Miss Brown’s book, published last year, was written as an advice book that encouraged women to become financially independent and experience sexual relationships before or without marriage. The book sold 2 million copies in three weeks. The original title was “Sex for the Single Girl,” but this was changed because “it sounded like it was advocating sex for all single girls.” Miss Brown had also written a section on contraceptive methods that was omitted from the final publication. Several screenwriters labored at the task of transforming the book into a fictional narrative story for the big screen. Also appearing in the picture will be Henry Fonda, Lauren Bacall, and Mel Ferrer.
