Movies: “Roustabout”

Nov. 10, 1964 - Opening today is “Roustabout,” a musical starring Elvis Presley as Charlie Rogers, a singer who takes a job working with a struggling carnival. Charlie’s attempted romance with Cathy Lean (Joan Freeman) leads to friction with her father Joe (Leif Erickson), who runs the carnival along with partner Maggie Morgan (Barbara Stanwyck). The film was produced by Hal Wallis and directed by John Rich from a screenplay by Anthony Lawrence and Allan Weiss. It was filmed, beginning in March, in Techniscope at Paramount Studios, with carnival sequences shot in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

The soundtrack album for “Roustabout” was released Oct. 20.
