Movies: “Reflections in a Golden Eye”

Mar. 29, 1965 - Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift have been signed for the leading roles in “Reflections in a Golden Eye,” the Carson McCullers novel to be filmed by Seven Arts Productions, Ltd., in the South this fall. No director or distribution company has been chosen. It is reported that Richard Burton may direct the film.
Taylor and Clift appeared together previously in “A Place in the Sun,” “Raintree County,” and “Suddenly Last Summer” (pictured).
The 1941 novel takes place at a U.S. Army base in Georgia. Private Ellgee Williams, a solitary man full of secrets and desires, has served for two years and is assigned to stable duty. After doing yard work at the home of Capt. Penderton, he sees, Leonora, the captain’s wife, nude and becomes obsessed with her.
Capt. Penderton, who is secretly homosexual, realizes that he is physically attracted to Pvt. Williams, but remains unaware of the private’s attraction to Leonora.
