June 10, 1964 - Opening today is “McHale’s Navy,” a comedy film based on the television situation comedy of the same name starring Ernest Borgnine, Tim Conway, and Joe Flynn, which in turn originated with a one-hour anthology drama starring Borgnine called “Seven Against the Sea.”
The new film version was directed by series producer Edward Montagne and its supporting cast includes Carl Ballantine, Gavin MacLeod, Jean Willes, Claudine Longet, and George Kennedy.
In the film’s story, McHale’s crew decides to use their PT boat as an off-track betting parlor. The men run into lots of trouble when they owe money to some Marines and a horse they bought causes a Japanese sub to run aground.
