Movies: “Man’s Favorite Sport?”

Jan. 29, 1964 - Opening in theaters today is “Man’s Favorite Sport?,” a comedy film starring Rock Hudson and Paula Prentiss and directed and produced by Howard Hawks. Mr. Hawks has said he intended the film to be an homage to his own 1938 screwball classic, “Bringing Up Baby,” with Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. The story of the new film deals with the author of a best-selling fishing guide who is actually extremely inexperienced in the sport, which causes mayhem when he is entered into a competition. The story idea was based on a line in a magazine article Mr. Hawks had read about a fishing expert who had never been fishing. Filming took place in January 1963.
