Oct. 1, 1963 - Opening today is “Lilies of the Field,” a comedy drama film by James Poe from the 1962 novel of the same name by William Edmund Barrett. It stars Sidney Poitier, Lilia Skala, Stanley Adams, and Dan Frazer and was produced and directed by Ralph Nelson. The title comes from the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 6:27–33 and its parallel scripture from Luke 12:27–31). It tells the story of an itinerant worker (Poitier) who encounters a group of East German nuns that believe he has been sent to them by God to build them a new chapel.
