May 17, 1964 - Sophia Loren, Paul Newman, and David Niven will head the cast of “Lady L,” which Peter Ustinov will adapt and direct from the novel by Romain Gary. The property will be produced by MGM in association with Carlo Ponti. It is scheduled to go before the cameras on Oct. 15.
The story of “Lady L” focuses on an elderly Corsican lady (Loren) as she recalls the loves of her life, including an anarchist (Newman) and an English aristocrat (Niven). The ending of the film is very different from the ending of the novel.
Metro also has signed the television and stage star Art Carney to make his film debut in “The Yellow Rolls-Royce.” The film will use a yellow 1931 Rolls-Royce Phantom II to frame the story of three very different owners: an English aristocrat (Rex Harrison), a Miami gangster (George C. Scott) and a wealthy American widow (Ingrid Bergman.) It is set in the years up to and including the start of World War II. Mr. Carney will play the Miami gangster’s chauffeur, Joey Friedlander.
The three-part drama will be filmed in England and on the Continent under the direction of Anthony Asquith. It will be produced by Anatole de Grunwald from a script by Terence Rattigan.
