Dec. 2, 1964 - Despite some last-minute changes by its producers, “Kiss Me Stupid,” a sex comedy starring Kim Novak (left with director Billy Wilder) and Dean Martin, has been given a C, or condemned, rating by the Legion of Decency, the Roman Catholic film evaluation agency.
The only other major Hollywood film given a condemned rating in the last eight years was Elia Kazan’s “Baby Doll” (1956).
The Mirisch Corporation said today it would go ahead with plans to release “Kiss Me Stupid,” which it produced in conjunction with Billy Wilder.
All dates for “Kiss Me Stupid” remain as planned, according to the Mirisch Company. The film was granted a seal by the Motion Picture Association of America.
In the story, jealous piano teacher Orville Spooner (Ray Walston) sends his beautiful wife Zelda (Novak) away for the night while he tries to sell a song to famous nightclub singer Dino (Martin), who is stranded in town.
Wilder was willing to soften the suggestion that Zelda had committed adultery with Dino, but he apparently refused to comply with other demands.
