Movies: “A Married Woman”

Dec. 3, 1964 - Jean-Luc Godard’s new film, “Une Femme Mariée” (A Married Woman), will be released in Paris this weekend after a lengthy and much-publicized battle with the censors.

The motion picture — then entitled “La Femme Mariée” (The Married Woman) — was shown at the Venice Film Festival last September without stirring any protests. However, shortly afterwards, it was announced that the French censors had demanded that its release in France be prohibited.

Godard (pictured with Macha Méril, who plays the title character) said today:

“After many discussions with Government officials, my film will be released with no great changes. A bidet has disappeared, and the title has been changed because the guardians of public morals thought the first title might infer that all married women committed adultery. I am preaching no such propaganda.”

In the film’s story, a superficial woman (Macha Méril) finds conflict choosing between her abusive husband (Philippe Leroy) and her vain lover (Bernard Noël).
