MLB: Reds' Freese Fractures Ankle, Out Three Months

Mar. 5, 1962 - Cincininnati’s Gene Freese (pictured getting first aid from assistant trainer Joe Carroll as manager Fred Hutchinson looks on), the power-hitting third baseman for the National League champion Reds, suffered a severe ankle fracture today in an intra-squad game. He probably will be lost to the club for three months. Freese broke his right ankle sliding into second base. He also suffered torn ligaments inside the ankle and a dislocation. The broken bone was the lateral malleolus — the knob on the outside of the ankle. He will not be ready to play until the regular season is two months old. The 28-year-old Freese hit .277 last year with 26 homers and 87 RBIs.
