Dec. 22, 1962 - Rubin (Hurricane) Carter (left), slugging middleweight contender, had to climb off the canvas in the fourth round tonight to win a unanimous decision over veteran Holly Mims, a late substitute, in their nationally televised fight at Madison Square Garden. The 33-year-old Mims of Washington, D.C., accepted the 10-round bout at 3 p.m. this afternoon and, although an underdog at 4-1, gave the 25-year-old knockout specialist from Paterson, N.J., one of the hardest fights of Carter’s brief professional career. “The Hurricane” became a professional boxer after his release from prison last year. His aggressive style and punching power, resulting in many early-round knockouts, have drawn attention and established him as a crowd favorite.
