Middleweight “Hurricane” Carter Visits World Fair

Sept. 29, 1964 - Rubin (Hurricane) Carter, a Paterson, N.J., middleweight who will fight Joey Giardello of Philadelphia for the title at Las Vegas on Oct. 23, covered a lot of symbolic ground today and also looked for distant worlds to conquer when he said he hoped his “next fight would be against Willie Pastrano,” the light heavyweight champion.

Of course, Carter must get past Giardello. The Paterson fighter spent about 20 minutes running around the Unisphere at the New York World’s Fair. He also jumped rope. Then he handed out autographed photographs of himself.

The 15-round fight between Carter and Giardello will be on theater-television. Giardello was not present at the World’s Fair to rebut Carter’s large-scale ambitions. Said Carter: “I’m confident I can beat Giardello, and I hope to add him to my list of first-round knockouts.”
