Feb. 20, 1963 - Willie Mays, baseball’s highest paid player, signed today for an estimated $100,000 with the San Francisco Giants. It amounts to a $10,000 raise for the 31-year-old centerfielder, who broke in with the Giants in New York in 1951. Mays joins an illustrious group, including Ted Williams, Stan Musial, and Joe DiMaggio, each of whom made $100,000 for some seasons. When the Giants won the National League pennant last season, Mays led the majors in home runs with 49.
