Maxwell Taylor on Viet Cong Hit List

June 27, 1965 - The Viet Cong guerrillas have made U.S. Ambassador Maxwell Taylor and four other American and South Vietnamese leaders the first targets on their death lists, the Hanoi radio said last night. The threat was made by the Viet Cong’s South Vietnam Liberation radio.

The Communist broadcast warned that those on the death list would “share the same fate as the American aggressor Harold G. Bennett.”U.S. Army Sergeant Bennett (pictured), 25 years old, of Perryville, Ark., was executed by the Viet Cong Thursday in reprisal for the execution of Tran Van Dong and other Communist terrorists.

“Harold G. Bennett, who has just paid for his crimes, was but a leaf falling in a revolutionary storm,” the broadcast said. “Again, this storm will sweep away all the aggressive castles built by the U.S. puppets in their nightmare.” It added:“Bennett has paid for his crimes. Tomorrow will be the turn of all the blood-thirsty devils of whom Maxwell Taylor, Alexis Johnson, Westmoreland, and Thieu and Ky will come first in the death list.”

U. Alexis Johnson is U.S. Deputy Ambassador to South Vietnam; Gen. William Westmoreland is commander of U.S. forces in Vietnam; Maj. Gen. Nguyen Van Thieu is the leader of the new Vietnamese military junta, and Air Vice Marshal Nguyen Cao Ky is the new Premier.

The commentary added: “For us Vietnamese people, all the U.S. aggressors, from Johnson, Dean Rusk, Robert S. McNamara, Taylor, Johnson, and Westmoreland to the U.S. expeditionary troops, the piratical aggressors who have raped our sisters, plundered, jailed, killed, disemboweled, plucked off livers of our dear compatriots, deserve thousands of times to be executed. Both the dead and the living have claimed for vengeance. We have full authority and duty to compel the aggressors and their stooges to pay for their crimes.

“We do what we say. We have enough strength to compel the U.S. imperialists and the Thieu-Ky clique to pay for their crimes after they shot Tran Van Dong in cold blood.”

In the end, the anti-imperialist forces won their peoples fight against US imperialism. They lost thousands but in the end their unwavering persistence took them to victory. It was a lesson to all anti-imperialist forces that victory comes about through faith in your might when you maintain unity in purpose!
