Marlon Brando in Bitter Custody Battle with Anna Kashfi

Dec. 8, 1964 - Actress Anna Kashfi (left) went to jail in tears, handcuffs, and a white bathrobe last night, the loser in a day-long tug-of-war with her ex-husband, Marlon Brando, for the custody of their 6-year-old son, Christian Devi.

In the 22-hour span that began at 1:30 a.m. yesterday:

1 — Miss Kashfi went from her home to the UCLA Medical Center where doctors said she appeared to be suffering from a “possible overdose” of pills.

2 — Brando picked up Christian, who had been in his mother’s custody, and took him to his home.

3 — Miss Kashfi, 30, left the hospital, reportedly broke into Brando’s home while he was at work about 1:30 p.m., recaptured the boy, and vanished with him. The actor said his ex-wife “broke into my house, assaulted and struck my secretary, threw a table through a plate glass window, and ran off with our son.”

4 — In a lightning legal maneuver, Brando went into Santa Monica Superior Court and won legal custody of the child.

5 — Miss Kashfi and the boy were found in a Brentwood hotel room about 11 p.m. last night.

6 — Brando returned home with young Christian.

7 — Miss Kashfi went to jail after topping a pushing and screaming fit in the hallway and lobby of the plush hotel by slapping a police sergeant. She was released on bail and will answer the charge of assault on Thursday.

Regarding custody of Christian, Superior Judge Edward R. Brand ordered Miss Kashfi to appear in court 9 a.m. Dec. 17, and he ruled that until then, “custody of the child shall be and remain with his father, free of any interference by you.”

Before going into court, Brando filed a report at the North Hollywood police station accusing Miss Kashfi of malicious mischief over the alleged sortie into his home.
