Maris Hits 41st Homer as Yankees Beat Twins; Slugger Now 19 Games Ahead of Ruth's '27 Pace

Aug. 4, 1961 - After a ten-game hiatus in his assault on Babe Ruth's home run record, Roger Maris resumed with a bang today at the Stadium, belting No. 41 in the first inning. Much later, Johnny Blanchard connected in the tenth inning with two Yanks aboard, lifting the Bombers to an 8-5 victory over the Twins. Maris is now 19 games ahead of Ruth's pace of 1927, when the Babe clouted a record total of 60. Mickey Mantle, with 40 home runs, is 15 games ahead. The Yankees' league lead of one and a half games remained unchanged because the Tigers defeated the Indians.
