July 25, 1961 - One seismic tremor after another shook the Stadium today as Yankee bats smashed eight home runs against the White Sox. Four were belted by Roger Maris, highlighting the Yankees' sweep of a double-header, 5-1 and 12-0. A vociferous gathering of 46,250 witnessed the Yank barrage, their most intimidating display of power this season. Maris connected twice in each game, against four different pitchers, knocking in a total of eight runs. The Yankee outfielder increased his home run total to 40. He thus put himself 24 games ahead of the Ruthian pace of 1927, when the Babe clouted a record total of 60.
