Malcolm X Pushes Charge against U.S. at U.N.

July 17, 1964 - Malcolm X appealed today to delegates of 34 African nations at a conference in Cairo today to bring the cause of United States Negroes before the United Nations.

In a message circulated to the heads of state and government as the meeting got under way, the Black Nationalist leader said “the deteriorating plight” of American Negroes was “definitely becoming a threat to world peace.”

He charged that the “United States Government is morally incapable of protecting the lives and property of 22 million Afro-Americans.”

In his message, Malcolm X said: “We assert the right of self-defense by whatever means necessary and reserve the right of maximum retaliation against our racist oppressors no matter what the odds against us are.”
