Aug. 16, 1963 - Mrs. Madalyn Murray (left) today accepted a deed to 80 acres of land near Stockton, Kansas, for her proposed atheist center. The 43-year-old Baltimore divorcée looked out over the tract of land near the strongly religious farm community in north central Kansas and remarked: “It is nice. It is pretty.” The deed, made out to a corporation called Other Americans, was donated by 77-year-old Carl Brown (right) of Stockton, an admitted nudist, atheist, and former member of the Kansas Legislature. Mrs. Murray brought the suit which produced the Supreme Court opinion that mandatory prayers and Bible reading in schools were unconstitutional. Residents in the area are overwhelmingly opposed to establishment of an atheist center there, but most of them indicate they will just ignore the Murrays. Mrs. Murray was accompanied today by her mother and two sons. She said she planned to enroll her son Garth, 8, in the public schools at Hays, 40 miles from Stockton, and would immediately file a suit to challenge use of nuns as teachers in the public schools there.
