Jan. 22, 1965 - Luci Baines Johnson (left), youngest daughter of the President, has been taking instruction in the Roman Catholic faith.
“No definite step has been taken,” Mrs. Elizabeth Carpenter, press secretary to Mrs. Johnson, said today. “The family considers it a personal and individual matter.”
The 17-year-old Luci, who prefers that spelling to her given name of Lucy, is a high school senior at the National Cathedral School for Girls, a private Episcopal institution.
Luci, her old sister Lynda Bird, and their mother are Episcopalians. The President is a member of the Disciples of Christ Christian Church, but he has attended church with his wife.
Only the family knows where and from what Roman Catholic priest Luci has been taking instruction. She long has had a deep interest in religion. White House sources pointed out that taking Catholic instruction did not necessarily mean she intended to become a convert.
Two days before Christmas, Luci was “pinned” by Paul Betz (right), 20-year-old son of a Washington physician, who is a Roman Catholic and a student at Mount St. Mary’s College in Emmitsburg, Md.
The pin was a school pin, and she declined to say at the time whether being “pinned” meant they were engaged.
“People are young, and people change,” she commented.
Lynda Bird has been squired recently by David Lefeve, a Roman Catholic. A U.S. Marine lieutenant, he recently left the service to enter an executive training program with a New York stock firm.
