Lombardi Guides Overtime Drill Session

July 29, 1964 - The Green Bay Packer offense, stopped cold by the defense in a scrimmage 24 hours earlier, drilled overtime today under the close direction of coach Vince Lombardi.

The session lasted 45 minutes and produced generally good protection for quarterbacks Bart Starr, Zeke Bratkowski, and rookie Marv Holland. But as was the case in yesterday’s scrimmage, halfback Paul Hornung tossed for the only touchdown.

Hornung fired a 15-yard scoring aerial to rookie back Tom Brown against a defense that was admittedly slow in getting started. A Hornung pass to Boyd Dowler had produced the only touchdown in yesterday’s scrimmage.

Brown is the former Maryland star who quit the Washington Senators baseball team earlier this month to return to football. He was the Packers’ second choice in the draft of college players two years ago.

Lombardi said he was impressed by the blocking of rookie guard Jack Maura of Northern Illinois, tackle John MacDowell, and center Dave Crossan.

Linebacker Lee Roy Caffey and defensive back Jesse Whittenton were limping after the morning session. Caffey had turned an ankle and Whittenton pulled a leg muscle. They skipped the afternoon drill.

The Packers finished 1963 with a 11-2-1 record, but trailed the eventual champion Chicago Bears by a half game at season’s end. The open the 1964 regular season at home against Chicago on Sept. 13.
