Lisa Lane, Lovestruck Chess Champion, Withdraws from Tournament

Jan. 5, 1962 - Lisa Lane (pictured), the 24-year-old American women’s chess champion, flew home to New York from London today. She had made headlines by withdrawing from a tournament there, saying she was in love and could not concentrate on chess. A handsome young man met her at Idlewild Airport, but it could not be determined if he was Neil Hickey. Miss Lane had said she was in love with Hickey. Miss Lane posed briefly for photographers when she got off the plane. But when she saw reporters, she ran toward a car where the man was waiting. “I have nothing to say,” she said in a shrill voice. When a reporter opened the car door to try to talk to the couple, the man grabbed the handle and slammed it shut.
