Nov. 17, 1964 - Like many a husband, President Johnson couldn’t remember today what time he was married 30 years ago.
“Lady Bird will have to tell you that because I wasn’t keeping time,” he told an inquirer.
Then he turned to Mrs. Johnson by his side and said, “in the evening about 10 o’clock, wasn’t it?”
“About 7,” she replied.
The Johnsons were married on Nov. 17, 1934, in old St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in San Antonio, Tex.
The Johnsons posed for formal anniversary pictures, at the request of photographers, in the Blue Room of the White House. After pictures inside, they went out on the porch on an Indian Summer day to pose for others with the Washington Monument in the background.
A dinner tonight was a surprise for the First Lady, planned by the President, with about 20 friends and the dates of the two Johnson daughters as guests.
One of the gifts Mr. Johnson gave his wife was plans for a trip because she had said that after the campaign she wanted to take a trip for a few days. The White House released no details.
As a fun gift, the President gave his wife a picture of Marshal Dillon (James Arness), whom Mrs. Johnson likes to watch on television. The picture, in a western-style rope frame, was inscribed by the President: “To Lady Bird and My Saturday Night Competition.” The “Gunsmoke” program airs Saturday nights at 10 p.m.
