Jan. 26, 1965 - Jerry West and Elgin Baylor monopolized the scoring tonight with a total of 83 points as they led the Lakers to a 111-99 victory over the Knicks before a crowd of 15,375 at Madison Square Garden.
In the opening game of the NBA doubleheader, the Detroit Pistons won a close duel with the Philadelphia 76ers, 107-105.
West and Baylor thoroughly dominated play in the nightcap, and in the middle two periods they combined for 53 of the 62 points their team scored in that time. West finished with 47 points, hitting on 18 of 27 shots from the floor, while Baylor scored 36 points on 15 field goals in 29 attempts.
Knicks coach Harry Gallatin locked the press out for seven minutes after the game. He later admitted he’d been reading the riot act to his faltering charges. They might not improve in the weeks ahead, but they can look forward to working harder for their paychecks.
“This is the poorest game they’ve played, by far, since I took over,” he said, shaking his head in disgust. “They’re going to really work from now on. We’re going to practice every spare minute, whether we’re home or on the road. I don’t care if it takes three or four hours every day.
“We’re going to work on fundamentals — passing, dribbling, shooting, and defense. We make too many silly mistakes. We lost the ball 30 times in our last game against the Lakers on the coast, and we probably lost it that much tonight. Do you know how many shots that cost us?” The Knicks looked good for a brief stretch during the second quarter when they pulled head, 37-27, but they could not stand success and fell behind, 52-47, at halftime.
