Kubrick Signs Sterling Hayden for “Doctor Strangelove”

Jan. 20, 1963 - Director Stanley Kubrick (right) has signed Sterling Hayden (left) to appear with Peter Sellers and George C. Scott in “Doctor Strangelove: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.” The film, which is being produced at Shepperton Studios near London, is a black comedy that satirizes nuclear conflict between the Soviet Union and the United States. Mr. Kubrick previously cast Mr. Hayden in “The Killing,” his 1956 film about a racetrack heist. “I have not worked with Sterling since ‘The Killing,’” said Mr. Kubrick today, “and I’m glad to get him for the part of the psychotic Air Force General who all but blows up the world.”
