Koufax Outduels Spahn as Dodgers Top Braves, 2-1

June 13, 1962 - Los Angeles’ fireball pitcher, Sandy Koufax (pictured between manager Walter Alston and Johnny Podres), outpitched Warren Spahn of Milwaukee with a 3-hitter and cracked his first major league homer tonight in the Dodgers’ 2-1 victory over the Braves. Koufax struck out six and walked two in posting his ninth victory against two defeats. His 370-foot line-drive homer in the fifth provided the decisive run. Spahn, a 41-year-old southpaw who began his pro career when Koufax was 6 years old, suffered another close defeat — his fifth by 1 run this season. With the victory, the Dodgers moved two games in front of the Giants in the battle for first place in the National League. The Giant lost to the Reds tonight, 5-0.
