June 18, 1962 - Tommy Davis broke up the game with a ninth-inning home run tonight as the Dodgers defeated the Cardinals, 1-0, before 33,477 fans in Los Angeles. Davis’s homer brought Sandy Koufax his 10th victory in 12 decisions and wrecked an otherwise brilliant pitching performance by the St. Louis right-hander Bob Gibson. Until the ninth, Gibson had given up only two hits and allowed only two Dodgers to get as far as second base. Koufax, touched for five singles, struck out nine and, for the first time in his career, went nine full innings without walking a man. Gibson fanned eight and walked four. The victory put the Dodgers one-and-a-half games ahead of the second-place Giants, who were idle today.
