Knicks Rip Pistons in Philadelphia

Jan. 29, 1965 - Philadelphia beating the Boston Celtics and the New York Knicks beating anybody are special treats in themselves. Getting both for the price of one is almost too much to ask, but 10,831 lucky people got just that in Philly tonight.

Since acquiring Wilt Chamberlain from San Francisco, Philadelphia has now whipped the mighty Celtics in two of their three meetings. Tonight, the score was 118-105, and Chamberlain won the duel with Boston’s Bill Russell.

Wilt’s 27 points and 34 rebounds while holding Russell to 12 points and 17 rebounds surely was tonight’s highlight. But it wasn’t the only one.

Philly’s Hal Greer had a hot night from the outside while scoring 31 points, and rookie Lucious Jackson took some of the pressure off Wilt in the middle as he piled up 17 points. Wilt and Lucious gave Philly complete domination under both backboards.

And the Knicks? They snapped their own four-game losing streak and Detroit’s three-game win streak by taking a 106-99 verdict. You can call Dave Budd — yes, Dave Budd — the hero of that one.

Budd, the unsung and often unplayed Knick veteran, scored a field goal with 1:36 remaining to break a 97-97 tie and send New York on to victory. Rookie Willis Reed followed Budd’s basket with a pair of his own to sew up the triumph. Reed wound up with 22 points, high for the Knicks.
