Keating Hits RFK for Joe McCarthy Connection

Oct. 20, 1964 - The Democrats for Keating Committee in New York City charged today that Robert F. Kennedy’s connection with Senator Joseph McCarthy’s committee in 1953 contradicted “the widespread belief that he is a liberal.”

Mr. Kennedy (right with McCarthy in 1953) had served as a counsel for the Senate Investigations Subcommittee from January to July 1953.

The Keating committee, which is headed by Gore Vidal and Joseph Fox, said that “liberal Democrats find it outrageous that whenever the subject of McCarthy comes up, Robert Kennedy refuses to repudiate McCarthyism and all that it has stood for.”

The committee added: “Nowhere in the record is there any evidence that Robert Kennedy reacted, as all liberals did at the time, with a sense of revulsion at McCarthy’s tactics.”

A spokesman at Kennedy headquarters in New York City said the candidate would reply to the charge after he had read it.
