Julie Andrews Signed for Film Version of “The Sound of Music”

Nov. 19, 1963 - Julie Andrews (pictured with her husband and daughter) has been signed to play Mary Martin’s original role in the film version of “The Sound of Music.” The Rodgers and Hammerstein musical is scheduled to start production at 20th Century-Fox early next year with Robert Wise as director. The British-born singer is now playing a straight dramatic role in “The Americanization of Emily” at MGM. Based on the 1949 memoir “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers” by Maria von Trapp, the film is about a young Austrian postulant who, in 1938, is sent to the villa of a retired naval officer and widower to be governess to his seven children.
