Judy Garland in Critical Condition

May 27, 1964 - Judy Garland is in critical condition today in a Hong Kong hospital, where she was rushed in nearly unconscious condition, it was reported today.

Stanley Rich of ABC reported from Hong Kong that the 41-year-old singer was taken to Canossa Hospital by her traveling companion, Mike Herron.

Herron was quoted as saying doctors worked on Miss Garland for two hours to save her life. He said she had been taken off the danger list but was still on the critical list.

Miss Garland, who was reported to be in an oxygen tent, will remain at the hospital for a “rest,” the ABC report said.

The singer went to Hong Kong from Melbourne, Australia, where she was virtually hissed off the stage by an angry audience she had kept waiting for more than an hour. She took the stage in street clothes and did not explain or apologize for her lateness. Midway through the performance, she abruptly left the stage and did not return.

Miss Garland has a record of attempted suicides. Her estranged husband, Sid Luft, said in a court deposition concerning their separation that she attempted suicide three times last year.
