Sept. 6, 1964 - A picnic lunch aboard the family yacht Marlin and two parties — one for the children — were the highlights of a Kennedy family celebration today in observance of Joseph P. Kennedy’s 76th birthday.
About 20 grandchildren joined the former Ambassador and several members of his family aboard the Marlin off Cape Cod.
Later, there were noisemakers, gifts, and a large birthday cake. When the excitement was over, the children sang songs, which pleased the grandfather.
Mr. Kennedy, partly paralyzed since suffering a stroke, did not get to see two of his grandchildren — Caroline, 6 years old, and John Jr., 3, children of President Kennedy. Mrs. Kennedy and her children had been expected but were unable to attend. They were at Newport, R.I., today.
The former Ambassador’s sons were not present. Former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy was campaigning for the Senate in New York, and Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts is recuperating from a broken back at a Boston hospital.
