José Torres Scores Split Decisioin over Gomeo Brennan

Sept. 4, 1964 - José Torres, the middleweight champion of Puerto Rico, scored a 10-round split decision over Gomeo Brennan tonight in a nationally televised bout in Miami Beach.

The battle was the prelude to the end of nationally televised boxing Friday nights. The last fight will be held next week in Cleveland. Torres weighed 167 pounds and Brennan 159.

Torres, 26 years old, from Ponce, scored his 30th victory in 32 fights. He has won 23 by knockouts. Brennan, 25, a former British Empire champion from Bimini, Bahamas, scored often in the early rounds but fought too much of a defensive battle as the fight progressed.

Both fighters brought the crowd of 2,000 to its feet with a rousing finish in the 10th round.

Brennan, goaded by the screams of his manager, Angelo Dundee, came out like a tiger in the final round, scoring heavily with crosses to the head and a sharp jab to the chest. But he lapsed into defensive style as the round wore on, and Torres came back.
