Johnny Carson to Succeed Jack Paar on NBC's "Tonight Show"

Jan. 30, 1962 - Johnny Carson will succeed Jack Paar as host of NBC’s “Tonight Show” in October. Mr. Paar will leave the show on March 29 to prepare for a new weekly series on NBC. In the interval between his departure and Mr. Carson’s arrival, the telecast will have various show-business personalities as hosts. The delay on Mr. Carson’s debut is caused by a contract that requires him to remain until September as host of ABC’s “Who Do You Trust?” Mr. Carson, who started on the show in 1957, has helped build it into ABC’s most highly-rated daytime show. It is not known whether “Who Do You Trust?” will continue after he leaves it.
