John Wayne Rescues Fainting Daughter at Her Wedding

Apr. 4, 1964 - Movie hero John Wayne dashed up the aisle and caught his daughter as she fainted today at her wedding.

Melinda Ann Wayne, 23, and Gregory Robert Munoz, 26, a Los Angeles County deputy district attorney, were married in Blessed Sacrament Church in Hollywood. James Francis Cardinal McIntyre, Archbishop of Los Angeles, performed the ceremony before 700 guests including such stars as Loretta Young, Cesar Romero, Jeanne Crain, and Irene Dunne.

During the nuptial Mass that followed the wedding ceremony, Melinda started teetering at her kneeling bench. Before she could fall, Wayne made a 15-foot dash from his pew and caught her. With Wayne holding her on one side and the kneeling bridegroom on the other, the bride soon recovered. A priest brought a chair, and she sat throughout the rest of the Mass.

Melinda is the daughter of Wayne and his first wife, Mrs. Josephine Saenz Wayne. They were wed in 1933 and divorced in 1945.
