Jim Brown Charged with Assault by 18-year-old Girl

June 21, 1965 - Cleveland Browns fullback Jim Brown was charged today with assault and battery by an 18-year-old girl.

Brenda Ayres, whose mother said she quit high school after having met Brown, filed the charge in Police Court in Cleveland.

The girl said Brown slapped and bruised her in a room at the Howard Johnson Motor Lodge, E. 107th St. and Euclid Ave., early yesterday morning. Brown, on hearing that a warrant had been issued for his arrest, surrendered at the central police station. He was released on a personal bond for an appearance in Municipal Court tomorrow morning.

Miss Ayres was accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Barbara Ayres, when she filed the complaint. Mrs. Ayres said she had taken her daughter to a hospital for treatment of cuts and bruises.

The girl said she met the 29-year-old Brown at the home of a friend May 12.

Brown is married and has three children. He lives in Cleveland and does public relations work for a soft-drink company during the off-season.

Brown declined comment, except to say: “I am not that small that I have to beat a girl.”

Art Modell, president of the Browns, who was attending a meeting in New York, commented:“I will reserve any opinion until I have a chance to talk with Jim. It is easy to level charges, but as far as I’m concerned, Jim is innocent until I have further facts.”
