Sept. 30, 1964 - Jim Brown and Johnny Unitas (pictured in January), two familiar NFL performers, moved to the top of the standings in the individual statistics published today.
Brown, the Cleveland fullback who ran for 104 yards against Philadelphia Sunday, displaced another Brown, Bill, of the Minnesota Vikings as the leading rusher. Jim Brown has gained 272 yards.
Bill Brown was handicapped by injuries last week and dropped to fourth place by gaining only 20 yards.
Don Perkins of the Dallas Cowboys took second with 241 yards, and Jim Taylor of Green Bay was third with 227 yards.
Unitas, who hit with 11 of 13 passes in Baltimore’s 52-0 rout of the Chicago Bears, moved into undisputed possession of the passing lead, figured on a system of efficiency in four categories.
Despite the Bears’ disaster in Baltimore, Johnny Morris of Chicago leads the receivers with 20 catches for 251 yards.
Sam Huff, the ex-New York Giant who now is the middle linebacker for the Washington Redskins, leads in interceptions with three.
Don Chandler of the Giants has the best punting average, 48.6 yards. Brady Keys of Pittsburgh is the punt return leader, and Marv Woodson, Pittsburgh’s rookie from Indiana, is the top kickoff return man.
