JFK Jr. Celebrates Fourth Birthday in NYC

Nov. 25, 1964 - John F. Kennedy Jr. — his father used to call him “John-John” — celebrated his fourth birthday today at a small, exclusive party in his mother’s large cooperative apartment at 1040 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.

Last year, his birthday fell on the third day after President Kennedy was slain at Dallas, and there could be no party, though David Powers, a White House aide who had become one of the boy’s favorites, played soldiers with him for a while that day.

Reports on the private party were sketchy at best.

“It was a very small party, and the guests were some of John’s little pre-kindergarten friends,” a spokeswoman for Mrs. Kennedy said. Another report said that several cousins and playmates joined John for afternoon games followed by dinner with cake, ice cream, and soda pop.

His sister, Caroline, was there, looking forward to her own birthday. She will be 7 tomorrow, and the Kennedy family is expected to gather at Mrs. Kennedy’s secluded fieldstone house on Dosoris Island, near Glen Cove, L.I.

Senator-elect Robert F. Kennedy visited Mrs. Kennedy’s apartment this afternoon. He gave her an album of German stamps honoring President Kennedy. They were presented to him earlier in the day by Ambassador Heinrich Knappstein of West Germany.

John received several gifts described by Mrs. Kennedy’s secretary as “nothing big — just little things she has picked up.”
