Indira Gandhi's New Hairstyle

Nov. 8, 1961 - The bouffant hair style — subject of many an American headline this year — has acquired a champion in India. After years of wearing her long hair pulled back into a tight knot, Mrs. Indira Gandhi showed up at the White House today with a bouffant hair-do, styled by a Washington beauty salon. The change has made India’s first lady — the daughter of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru — look far younger than her 44 years. It has also put her on a hair-fashion level with her official hostess, Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy. Other than the new hair-do, Mrs. Gandhi has changed little since the last time she visited the White House and toured Washington in 1956 during the Eisenhower Administration. She still wears saris. She is still regarded as a good speaker and an astute politician.
