Indians Top Pirates in Benefit Exhibition Game

Aug. 11, 1964 - The Cleveland Indians took the home-and-home exhibition series with the Pittsburgh Pirates, winning 5-2 last night for the benefit of HYPO (Help Young Players Organize). The money raised will be used to help local communities buy equipment and build ball fields.

There were 7,762 fans who came to Forbes Field for last night’s game, and they watched young Luke Walker, the southpaw the Pirates brought up from Ashville to pitch the game, fan nine of the Tribe in seven innings. Steve Blass finished out the last two innings.

The two Pittsburgh pitchers gave up nine hits, while the Pirates were able to collect just seven against Macon Lowe and Huey Howden, two Cleveland farmhands, who worked eight of the nine innings. Pete Ramos finished it for the Indians.

The Tribe scored two in each of the first two innings and got their other run in the seventh.

Roy Kuhl, minor league organizational catcher for the visitors, had three singles and drove in two runs.

Cleveland got the first two runs without anyone knocking them in. One scored on a wild pitch and the other on a throwing error by Walker.

The Bucs got on the board in the seventh when Bill Virdon doubled, Jerry Lynch hit a pinch single, and Bob Bailey doubled.

Six arbiters from the Pittsburgh Umpires’ Association, which also bought $100 worth of tickets, contributed their services.
