Highlights of President Johnson’s News Conference

July 30, 1964 - Following are the highlights of President Johnson’s news conference today:

Test Ban — The President praised the nuclear test treaty, which has been in effect a year this week, and said it showed that “we can live in strength without adding to the hazards of life on this planet.” [Opening statement.]

Racial Issues — He cautiously endorsed yesterday’s statement by the leading civil rights organizations calling on their members to suspend mass demonstrations until after the election.

OAS — He praised the Organization of American States for taking a stand against Cuban aggression in Venezuela.

Vice President — He said he had made no decision on who his running mate should be but gave an extensive list of qualifications.
